The Schechter Institute is an Israeli institution of higher education whose aim is to research, to teach and to disseminate Jewish Studies with an open, equal and pluralistic approach, while stressing their meaning and applicability in modern life. The Institute is identified with the Conservative Jewish movement. The Schechter Institute was founded in 1989 in Jerusalem and in 1990 opened its first program of study leading to a master’s degree, as a branch of the US Jewish Theological Seminary, awarding an American academic degree. In 2006 the Institute was accredited by the Council for Higher Education as an independent institution of higher education and today operates the largest master’s degree program in Jewish studies in Israel.
