SPANISH AND MIDDLE EASTERN JEWRY STUDIES WILL BE RECOGNIZED AS AN ACADEMIC FIELD REQUIRING PROMOTION IN TEACHING AND RESEARCH

The Council confirmed: Recognizing Spanish and Mid-Eastern Jewry Studies as an academic field requiring promotion in teaching and research

The Council has adopted recommendations from the team on “Research and Teaching of Spanish and Mid-eastern Jewry’s Heritage and Culture in Higher Education.” The team concluded that assimilating this field of knowledge into fundamental educational processes requires leveraging, an action it views as having great importance for advancing the Humanities, enhancing the historical recognition of the Jewish people relative to its dispersion and generations based on well-founded fields of knowledge. This move will enrich Israeli society’s cultural mosaic.

The Council recommended continuing to examine, and provide oversight on, this issue’s integration into the upcoming multiyear plan 5783-5788 (2022-2027) from the perspectives of teaching and research.

Council Chairperson, Minister of Education Dr. Yifat Shasha-Biton: “The human mosaic which is Israeli society must also become manifest in curricula and fields of knowledge and research. I see our approval of the program as having great importance. The decision, based inter alia on the conclusions reached by the Biton Committee and the team headed by Professor Haviva Pedaya, will make the Israeli higher education system richer and more inclusive. This is also my opportunity to thank them all for their work.”
